one million paintings by first year painters a.k.a ROYGBIV

the first semester is coming to a close and so the time has come for the first year painters to reveal their chops in the gallery here on the first floor of 1000 Broadstreet.


since there are seven of us we logically did a show called ROYGBIV. a sort of monochrome show where each of us was assigned a colour. so here we go in that order.

R (me)

this is a print on BFK of a digital photo

the red dots in the photo are of gallery "sold" stickers stuck to the ground

the ground that you're standing on while looking at the print. the idea is that the viewer realizes she is standing on the stickers and, since they have been stood upon by many veiwers, notices that the fresh stickers in the print are now worn-out and damaged stickers. so far it hasn't been working - too subtle for people to notice - but i like the idea and will keep working on it.

similar idea except without the accompanying print.

i don't know that anyone has noticed these stickers at all.

although not technically IN the gallery it is near and IS technically part of ROYGBIV.

heather has been working exclusively with plaster directly on her studio wall and found a clever way to introduce orange into her whitecentric labors.

my still shots don't do this justice. it's a realtime sunrise shot from andy's studio window that peeks out from the trees and floods to yellow


this is highlighter on the wall masked off to the same size as the dvd screen of the sunrise. this one is called sunset since, due to the fugitive nature of the highlighter, it is actually fading from the wall. when i thought about the highlighter more i got really excited about this piece.

lauren has also been whitecentric in her exclusive use of paper until now


she not only has påinted green but experimented with yellow and blue paint reflecting on each other - using light to create color

with this detail i hope to show how she has painted the backs of her paper so that they would reflect color onto the wall

jimmy peterson gave me this as i was leaving him in chicago (on my roadtrip from utah to virginia)(see link for more paintings)

so i made him this in richmond and mailed it to him.

i stayed up all night last friday in a hammering frenzy

this is the one thing that i never intended to be art that has gotten attention from three separate studio visits with visiting artists. the last one called it "much better than those (pointing to the roundies)"

one million red things

i made this last night (after my aborted effort monday night). it looks like a poster in this image so i put in more photos to show how things are stacked into a cut out window in the stairway. this is the 2nd floor of our art building which is home to crafts, clay, metal, fibers - you know - the hippies of artschool.

this is the 6th installation-stack-painting and i've been calling them "builds" for the double meaning afforded by the german "bild". i'm debating which spelling to use right now (as i'm about to make these works official and talk about them in a presentation on saturday) so let me know if one sounds better to you: build or bild. so this would be Bild 6 or RedBuild or something.

because it is tightly packed into a wall 'frame' this one achieves the found-object-sculpture-as-painting much more assertively than the rest. controlling the color scheme has also brought more painterly thought patterns into it. it's weird to stare at it in real life and have it fluctuate from 2-D to 3-D.

i sort of give myself rules for these Bilds and i've ended-up changing them a little for each one. with this Build i allowed myself to put toys in the back and paint the ends of my boards by dipping them in liquid rubber.

i just want to give Bild and Build equal p.c. opportunity until i make a decision...

this is part of a group show the first-year-painters are doing called ROYGBIV. since there are seven of us we each get a color and do a monochrome work. everyone will be installing tomorrow so you'll get to see my peer's work soon!

one million backyard bricks

these are almost finished - a little teaser for what i've been doing in my backyard during this streak of perfect autumn


while harvesting these bricks i have uncovered one giant caterpillar, one giant possum, one syringe, one tiny ziplock of drugs, and one million spiders.

still not quite finished - the whole backyard will be an installation.
