the Hirshhorn basement featured John Baldessari as curator showing things that interested him from the collection. There was an Anish Kapoor that seriously freaked us out - it was like a black hole and a sphere simultaneously in real space. Lauren got scared, Aaron got titillated, and i was hypnotized - sucked toward it like a zombie toward living flesh. after experiencing the inexperiencible i am prepared to give Anish the MacArthur Genius Award - at least he deserves it over whats her face that makes the complex technical paintings on vellum...oh yeah: Julie Mehretu.
there was also a great Anselm Kiefer show that we weren't allowed to take photos of and a meh Baldessari show that there was no point to take photos of upstairs.



and now the real reason for our d.c. trip: Joe McSpadden!


eat your heart out, Cassian. actually, it was so uncomfortable that you may not have enjoyed the opening despite your love of the McSpaddens.

the sweatband isn't any longer for show as it was in the Lambie room - it was a million degrees hot.

Aaron and Joe love each other like twins. i'm so glad they didn't dress exactly the same on purpose - that would have completely ruined the moment.

If i ever figure out how to blog video you shall witness some more of our jetty adventures later... talk about the perfect weekend adventure right before leaving Utah to move to artschool.

i got to help joe kick off this new series of his which takes advantage of the ubiquitous supply of urban shadows available to the public. see and read more at his blog linked to mine and his flickr account linked to the title.


Rob Egbert casting us a shadow onto the Seattle Art Museum - thanks also to his wife, Sara, for helping with Seattle shadows and getting us matching blue shirts for the performance.

We visited the Frye Museum in Seattle twice and got two different looks at this shadow.

you may recognize this exquisite drawing from my link to casey jex smith's website, but i repeat it here now because
A. i wish i could have it and
B. casey is currently featured on fecalface with many works and an interview (linked to this post by clicking the title)

i just returned from one month of "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Across North America 2006" with many an interesting thing to blog without, unfortunately, a camera to document any of it. i'm telling you this because i wish i could also post work by casey's friend Amanda that i saw two days ago - intricate figurative glaze paintings on clay supports. they have a show this saturday in a new mission district (san francisco) gallery called Receiver that you should go to if you're in the bay area this weekend.

one million big brothers

this public sculpture resides on the police department's wall. i can only assume it is meant to comfort/scare me into feeling safely looked after while assuring me of the aesthetic sensitivity of my protectors.

this building is across the street east of my church and across the street south of the ada gallery so i get to feel protected all the time.

one million discarded paintings

WARNING: this post may contain male and female nudity

in the next post you will see my use of 100 undergrad paintings. the few spotlighted in this post just didn't work out, and since i live a couple blocks from the gallery i took them home for a little impromptu exhibition against the brick wall next door.

i had barely placed the paintings and walked into the house when a business dressed biker's attention was caught and he veered off his route to catch the show. when he caught me trying to take this secret photo of him he was embarrased:
biker: "oh! i'm sorry!"
me: "no problem! you're the first to stroll this public gallery."
biker: "well, thank-you for displaying your work!"
me: "you're welcome!"

i left for an hour and when i returned one of the paintings was gone! mr. male frontal nude was the first to go. amused by the quick success of this project i was also immediately disappointed that i didn't have the theft on film.

that very night we watched from our kitchen window as two girls pulled-up in a car and, under the cover of darkness, took three more paintings.

within three days time every single painting had been stolen from my empty lot gallery.

hopefully i can get a time lapse infrared camera for the next show...
